David Montegari, CFA, fractional CFO

Is it time for a CFO?

Most businesses don't need a full-time CFO. Many need CFO thinking sooner than they realize. These are the signs I see most often:

Revenue is up. Cash is tight.

Growth is consuming cash faster than it creates it, and you can't see the next 13 weeks clearly.

You're raising capital or talking to lenders

Investors and banks want a model, a forecast, and a story that holds up to scrutiny.

You don't know your true margins

You can't say with confidence which products, clients or locations actually make money.

Big decisions run on gut feel

Hiring, pricing, expansion and major purchases are decided without scenarios behind them.

An exit or acquisition is on the horizon

Buyers pay for clean, credible financials. Preparation starts well before the deal does.

You've outgrown your bookkeeper

The books are accurate, but nobody is turning them into forward-looking decisions.

Plain-English answers.

Meet David Montegari, CFA.

I started my career pricing risk as a derivatives trader, then spent 15 years in corporate finance building the forecasts, plans and models that leadership teams rely on. Today I bring that experience to business owners as a fractional CFO.

The best finance leaders don't just report the numbers. They help you understand them, challenge them, and act on them. That's the standard I hold myself to.

Common questions

What is a fractional CFO?

A fractional CFO is an experienced chief financial officer who works with your business part-time, on an ongoing or project basis. You get senior-level strategy, forecasting and financial leadership for a fraction of the cost of a full-time executive.

How is a fractional CFO different from a bookkeeper or accountant?

Bookkeepers and accountants record and report what already happened. A CFO looks forward: building forecasts, managing cash, preparing for capital, and helping you make decisions. I work alongside your existing bookkeeper or CPA, not in place of them.

When does a business need a fractional CFO?

Usually when growth outpaces financial visibility: cash gets tight, a raise or loan is coming, margins are unclear, or an exit is on the horizon. If you're not there yet, I'll tell you, and point you toward what you need instead.

How does an engagement work?

It starts with a conversation about your business and goals. From there we agree on a scope: an ongoing monthly partnership, a defined project such as a capital raise or a forecasting build, or interim coverage while you hire.

What would greater financial clarity make possible?

Start with a conversation about your business, your priorities and the questions you want answered. No obligation, just a straight assessment of where a CFO can help.
